Environmental Technologies

environmental technologiesMaritime Innovation is also skilled in the management of marine resources. We are located in the heart of Quebec’s maritime cluster near several marine environment research centres including the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER) (Rimouski marine sciences institute), the Centre de recherche en biotechnologies marines (Marine biotechnology research centre) and the Centre interdisciplinaire en développement de la cartographie des océans (Interdisciplinary centre for ocean cartography development).

Environmental considerations are growing and take a major place in all of our activities. The maritime industry is very concerned by environmental issues and this can only continue to increase, particularly in the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence Seaway which are fragile marine areas in which the interaction between the industry and the environment is a growing source of concern.

One of the problems related to marine navigation is the introduction of invasive aquatic species through ships’ ballast waters. The economic impacts caused by the introduction of the zebra mussel into the Great Lakes / St Lawrence System in 1985 has been estimated at five billion dollars.

Another problem encountered by the maritime industry is the amount of atmospheric emissions given off every day by merchant vessels. The industry is actively looking for new technologies and ways to conform to new regulations resulting from the Kyoto Protocol and the MARPOL Convention.

Since its inception, Innovation mariitme has actively been seeking viable economic solutions to these questions.
